organization and communication
for the medical home.

The EMMA System is Everyone’s Medical Monitoring Assistant. It’s an essential tool kit for parents or guardians of children with complex medical conditions who will be cared for in the home following hospital discharge. The kit includes two binders of useful notes, tips and forms for families who find themselves in unfamiliar territory – that of caring for a child with special needs and coordinating the care with tracking, monitoring and documentation. The kit assists families with ensuring clear communication between caregivers and medical professionals who provide services to, and on behalf of, the child. It also covers a variety of other issues that the families may now face. An accompanying DVD provides an audio-visual element that helps families understand how to best use the EMMA System

The EMMA System was developed by Julie Powers, a mother of a special needs child, who had eight years of hands-on, trial-and-error experience in the home, in the hospital, and in the clinic. This experience culminated in the creation of a product vital to the health and well-being of a child with complex medical issues, as well as the child’s family.

The EMMA System is written in a casual and comfortable tone that makes the users feel as if a helpful friend who has already been there is giving them hints on how to deal with a new and foreign situation that can otherwise be overwhelming and potentially very frightening and stressful.

What does the EMMA System include?

For what diagnoses will the EMMA System work?

The EMMA System was developed to assist families of children with any diagnosis. Simply stated, that is why it is called Everyone’s Medical Monitoring Assistant. The only common denominator among the children is that each of them has a medical condition that requires ongoing medical care, multiple medications and/or therapies, and/or significant medical intervention and/or follow-up after they leave the hospital.

Disclaimer: The EMMA System is strictly an organizational tool. It is not intended to replace any professional medical advice, nor should any part of the kit be used as a medical recommendation. Nothing in the kit should replace any type of monitoring system provided by a medical professional, nor should it replace care directives from trained health professionals.

Who Benefits from the EMMA System?

The Child

  • Improved continuum of care through better caregiver communication
  • Easy-to-read records help ensure that medications are dispensed properly
  • Notes showing that therapies are completed properly helps ensure effective therapy and follow-through
  • Written record of positioning throughout the day helps ensure proper changes in movement
  • Documentation provides tool for medical personnel to better diagnose and treat conditions
  • Better harmony in the home by relieving some of the stress felt by parents, family members and caregivers

The Parent(s)/Caregiver(s)

  • Parents don’t feel as lost, struggling to figure out where to start
  • Decreased “trial and error” time to sort out what works best for that family
  • Better preparation for this new situation
  • Greater sense of organization and control, thereby decreasing stress
  • Parents feel like they’ve received the services of a personal consultant and that they (and their child) have been assisted in a helpful way

Designated Charity

  • Every time an EMMA System is purchased, a portion of the profits will benefit one of the following charities: Ronald McDonald House Charities, Footprints or the Make A Wish Foundation. Read more...
  • When a designated charity is not specified at the time an order is placed, management will select a charitable beneficiary from the three named organizations.

Medical Personnel

  • Doctors, in-home nurses, therapists, and other medical personnel benefit from documentation and clear records for communicating with parents/caregivers for continuity of care
  • When there is clear communication between the child's caregivers and the medical team, better health care outcomes are possible, such as more accurate diagnoses, more effective treatments, increased level of functionality and increased longevity
  • Scheduled time with the child is used more effectively because office and/or home visits are more focused and the propensity for no-shows can decrease

The Hospital

  • By providing a patient-focused tool, the child’s family appreciates the extra step the hospital has taken that recognizes the stressful situation they are in, thus developing a parent-hospital bond (when the kit is provided by the hospital)
  • When the caregivers are informed and have a tool to document the care of their child and specific problems or questions, the information shared with the doctors and other health care providers is better directed – thus providing the medical team with more accurate information to diagnose and treat patients, potentially leading to better care and better outcomes. The hospital does a better job of treating the child's medical issues when given accurate and complete information from the patient's family.

    & Testimonials

“I‘ve cared for babies in a children’s hospital NICU, and I’ve provided services for a variety of pediatric patients in the home setting. I’ve experienced first-hand the chaos that can surround a family with a medically-complex child. The EMMA System provides the necessary outline, forms and helpful information for parents so that when their child leaves the hospital, they know where to start. Using the EMMA System can provide the essential pieces of a complex puzzle when transitioning to home, while providing ongoing tools for in-home care and communication with the health care community. I believe the EMMA System will be the standard tool kit for these special children.”

“I’ve delivered occupational therapy services to children in their homes for more than 10 years, and during that time, I saw the EMMA System in action. I relied on the daily care logs to review the days between my visits - to see the child’s progress and changes in daily routine. I was also able to personally rely on the EMMA System after I gave birth to premature twins at 26 weeks. Having the logs and forms available in my home helped us maintain clear communication between all caregivers. The EMMA System is an excellent way to help families tackle the monumental task of coordinating care and having the necessary information ready for medical professionals. My family has been blessed by the EMMA System.”

“I’ve seen the EMMA System’s daily care logs in use, and I have depended on them to provide me with a quick overview of the child’s life since my last therapy visit. The logs are extremely useful to me for knowing where the child is today, based on the last week of easy-to-read documentation by the family, caregivers, and other therapists. The EMMA System is the communication tool that allows necessary implementation and tracking of positioning schedules and braces/orthotics wear-time. It also helps ensure that the child’s life is balanced with stimulating, educational and fun activities.”

“I’ve delivered speech therapy services to children in their homes since 1996, and where I have seen the EMMA System in use, I noticed that the home was much more organized and there seemed to be a lower level of stress because the family had gained some control over the child’s care management and daily needs. There is nothing else like the EMMA System being provided to families with special needs children, and I believe it fills the gaps.“
