About EMMA

Thank you for taking the time to review the EMMA System. We hope that at least some of the information included in the two-binder kit helps your child now or at some point in the future.

The EMMA System was developed as a way to help others while memorializing a very special girl who transformed the world around her during her brief visit to earth. With the EMMA System, her memory lives on, and her legacy continues.

About Julie Powers

Julie PowersBeing a Mother…With a Twist

Julie first became a mother in September 1996 to a bouncing baby boy, and then again in January 1999 to a beautiful baby girl. Along with all the usual juggling acts that accompany being a mother, wife, daughter, sibling, aunt, friend, dog-owner, community volunteer and full-time employee in the banking industry, Julie was introduced to a new world of chaos when her daughter, Emma, suffered an acute life threatening event on April 30, 1999. Emma stopped breathing during a late-morning nap and was without oxygen for about 15 minutes, during which time she suffered severe brain damage, resulting in 24-hour medical care and complete dependence (suctioning, feeding tube, positioning, medication, wheelchair, etc.).

For eight and a half years, Emma’s family cared for her at home, while Julie became the undisputed household and medical care manager. She learned how to organize an extensive array of caregivers and medical personnel, as well as daily and critical care for her daughter. She created tracking and monitoring devices to ensure proper care and clear communication between all caregivers.

Medical professionals commented on the benefits of these communication tools, as well as the attention to detail they saw, and they credited Emma’s unusually good health to thorough home care. The system that had been put into action assured Emma’s continued care throughout each day, as well as coordinated care between doctors, nurses, therapists, and school personnel. Julie was asked to package and market the system so that other families could benefit from her knowledge and experience.

After Emma’s passing in 2007, Julie considered the task of combining what she had learned in order to create the ultimate tool kit for parents in similar situations. It would be “everything she wished she knew when she left the hospital in 1999.”

Months of research and development culminated in the creation of The EMMA System (Everyone’s Medical Monitoring Assistant).

Now Julie’s focus is on distributing The EMMA System and passing on Emma’s legacy, assisting other families who are navigating their way through very difficult transitions.
